Three weeks ago an idea was thrown on paper… a week later the idea was approved for funding by EWB’s Innovation Fund… and last week that idea began to materialize! The idea was 3-fold, with one of the aspects being to create a magazine to highlight all the hard work being done by Agriculture Extension Staff & farmer groups here in Ghana!!           Last Thursday Meghan, a fellow EWB volunteer and photo-extraordinaire,...

As you might remember, thanks to the efforts of team HODA, the Farmer Group Business Development Fund was created with the money raised from the event. In brief, the fund will award 5 groups with GHC 100 loans to put towards their group farming business activity. In order to be eligible for the loan, groups had to be undertaking the Agriculture As A Business program as well as fill out an application that challenges the groups to reflect and plan for their farming...

Last Thursday, 13 (Plus one who will be arriving soon) high-energy and very talented students arrived in Ghana to create opportunities and change people’s lives for the summer. They are part of the Junior Fellowship (JF) program that EWB has, which allows individuals from various chapters around Canada to join the frontlines in the battle against poverty and witness the realities for themselves. Upon their return they will play an integral part in their universities and...

When the AAB program first began in it’s unfinished stages a year ago, AEAs were asked to volunteer in the program. There were given no extra incentives or fuel money, but were asked to uptake the program in order to develop the farmers in their district. In Bongo, seven AEAs joined Megan as they went from field to field implementing three cards revolving around group development. For over a year, the Superb Seven have continued to adapt the program – which is now...

So with the rainy season only weeks away, many farmers here in Northern Ghana are busy preparing their fields. Baba recently started to prepare the field outside our house, so I thought I’d give it a try! With my digger in hand I headed out to the corner of a piece of our land and began ‘ploughing’ the area. Arc by arc my back started to break; another reminder my endless moto riding has got me out of shape! As I ‘plough’, Baba begins to create single holes for...

Now I must admit, I have a pretty all-star filled cast of AEAs that I work with here in Bongo; however,  if there’s one that has continually excelled since day one, it’s Cosmas. His dedication to his job, as well as the farmer groups he works with, is truly admirable. He’s been part of the ministry for around 15 years now; however, some years back left for a while before returning. According to his colleagues, you’d think someone would usually come back due to...

Some may call it a revelation; I too was tempted to call it a reality check… but in actual fact it was a reality kick… a swift kick in the butt to wake up and smell the pito. It first occurred during a farmer group meeting with Joseph, a young extension agent doing his National Service. When we first arrived on scene to meet the group for the first time, it was the usual: only a couple of group members present under a tree, the sign of yet another failed meeting...

It would have been so easy for Team HODA to go online, and with a click of a button donate all their money raised to an overseas development charity. It would have been so simple, so worry free… but so unlike Team HODA! From day one they refused to take shortcuts, and until this day it remains the same. They had two conditions in mind for the money raised during the event, 1. They wanted the money to be used directly in Bongo to create opportunities. 2. They wanted to...
