This summer I really started playing a lot of tennis… well maybe ‘a lot’ is an overstatement, but relative to previous years, my tennis racket finally started to see the light of day. When I first hit the court it was de-ja-vu as I remembered my parents used to take my sister and I out every Saturday morning when we were little to stay active. The de-ja-vu continued as I started to play… same problems still seemed to creep up:
1) “Man they don’t build these fences high enough!”
“POOF!” it’s like playing baseball with a tennis racket at times. For some odd reason I always tend to hit the bal sky-high to the point of launch over the ‘seemingly large’ fences that surround most tennis courts. I used to think it was incredible power, but one of my friends (who’s really good at tennis) reminded me it’s lack of skill. So he coached me. I got it. For the most part. When it did happen again, I’d just flex my muscles and smile (Gotta love perspective!)
2) “Not fair, who turned gravity off?”
You’re probably curious to hear this one. I always questioned the rule why the ball had to hit the court on the other person’s side… I mean isn’t getting the ball across the net good enough! Obviously, that aint the name of the game and one thing I always found myself fall into was ‘power-shots’ to the other side. Besides almost smoking out my friends in the gut, I always remember that wonderful thought I learnt in point 1, *Flex and Smile*!
3) “My left arm isn’t working”
I guess you could call that an excuse for a horrendous backhand. I always seem to either miss the ball or ‘power-shot’ the ball when doing a backhand. It’s like it’s trying to prove it’s stronger than my forehand. Ah well *Flex and Smile*
Well if there’s one thing that’s for sure, I REALLY wish I got to see the following ‘tips’ videos BEFORE losing my tennis buddies. In the videos (which can be found here), Milos Raonic gives some incredible tips on how to improve your game (I should probably say “MY” game to be more accurate). The series are quick antidotes that really give you an understanding of how to practice the right form and follow-through.
For those of you who don’t know, at the age of 20, Milos Raonic is regarded as one of the best young tennis players in the world. Best of all he’s Canadian! #GoCanada!
